The history of Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church has been traced back one hundred and fifty - eight years. Although there is no one living who remembers that far back, some of our members parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents were members of Mt. Zion down through the years. The church was organized in 1847. It was located in Bevilles Corner near the old Marsh Pond. Mother Florence Edward Russell's parents were members of Mt. Zion in 1897. At that time the church was in the Bethlehem Association. In the later years the church was torn down and rebuilt in the Hunt's Quarters, a predominantly caucasian (white) neighborhood. Hunt's Quarters was in the vicinity where the Masonic Lodge is now located. The newly renovated church flourished there for many years. The church was then torn down and rebuilt on Highway 48, near where Burns Mower Service is now located. Moving forward in time a little, the land around the curve on Highway 48 was purchased. The church was torn down from the previous location and rebuilt on that property. When the state started construction work on Higway 48, the church was too close to the Highway and had to be torn down. It was rebuilt at its present location, which is now 310 E. Southland Avenue. Many changes have taken place in remodeling and adding to the structure to make God's House a beautiful and comfortable place of worship. Through it all a spirit of love and unity continue to exist. This church was built upon a rock and that rock is Jesus. St. Matthew 16:18 says "And I say unto you Peter, and upon this rock I (Jesus) will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." Psalms 127:1 says Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is time for us to move forward in the renovation of our church. Through the Leadership of our former Pastors, Elder Howell, Elder James Thompson, Elder Fred L. Lewis, the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the continuing leadership of our current pastor Elder Wilbert Fleming we are accomplishing our goal. We are asking you to pray for us that the Lord will bless us in our endeavors. Your Fellow Followers Of Christ Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church Of Bushnell, Florida
Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the King's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, "let us rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for this good work. Nehemiah 2:18
